HOW GUINNESS BOOK OF CAME INTO EXISTENCE..

HISTORY OF GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS Guinness World Records started receiving a lot of attention recently, starting with Hilda Bacci's cook-a-thon and followed by one million and one other attempts that have been made, by Nigerians. Today, we will be looking at the history of what we now know as GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS. In the year 1951, twin brothers Norris and Ross McWhiter, ran a fact finding agency on Fleet Street, London, providing information to newspapers and encyclopedias. Incidentally, Norris and Ross had a friend from their university days, Christopher Chataway, who worked with Guinness Breweries, Dublin. On a fateful day in November, the 10th to be precise, Sir Hugh Beaver, managing director of Guinness Breweries at the time, went on a shooting party and became involved in an argument of which was the fastest game bird in Europe between a golden plover and a red glouse, after missing his shot at a golden plover. Later that evening, Sir Beaver realized that there were no reference books which he could use to confirm the answer to the debate. Furthermore, there was no book anywhere in the world with compilations of records that could be used to settle similar arguments. This give him the idea of a book of a records. Christopher Chataway recommended his twin friends, Norris and Ross McWhiter, for the job. After being commissioned to do the work, the brothers put their fact finding skills to use and on August 27, 1955 the first edition of the then GUINNESS BOOK OF SUPERLATIVES was released. By the end of the year, it was the number 1 British best seller. Thus, GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS holds the record of being the first ever book of world records in history - and in case you are wondering, Sir Hugh Beaver was right - the golden plover is the fastest game bird in Europe, and the rest, they say, is history. 📷 A copy of the first edition of the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS.
